Stuff white people like

I found this off of "the bone's" blog. I have some thoughts on it.

It's interesting how much I could see where Christian Lander was coming from in is list of what a significant chunk of culture lunges for. What's more interesting is how much white culture doesn't want to be figured out. I gather from some of the responses (and the bone's blog) that people deny liking or acting the way white people act in this Lander's prescription. Or, if they do admit to liking or acting under white culture, a submissive tone takes over (for example, "Fine, you got me! I act white and I like New Balance").

Is this because people don't want to feel like they have the lives determined for them? If it is, maybe people should take the time to understand what is pushing them to do what they are doing.

On the other hand, Lander is generalizing. I hope he isn't getting to big of a thrill from jotting down what 9 out of 10 white people have said to him about Ivy League schools. I don't think his point is: "Look at all of you stupid white people acting the same. What is wrong with you?" I suppose the point is more along the lines of, "Are white people thinking for themselves? Isn't it interesting how all of these phenomena exist? Are these good things? Have you made a conscious decision to only trash-talk the corporations that you're too good for or are you being a hypocrite without realizing it?

I'm really fascinated by Christian Lander's list. If Lander would say that that statement is just a predictable symptom of whiteness, then my 4:30 am musing of his list being a diving board into the progressive realm of deconstructing white ideology is completely in vain.
